Updating Your Home for Spring – Easy Tips to Freshen Inside & Out

Share This Post:

The days are getting longer, the sunshine brighter, and the buds will soon pop open on the trees. Spring is on its way! If you’ve been hibernating this winter and are sick of staring at the same old décor, maybe it’s time to freshen things up. A few changes, both inside and out, will prepare you for brighter days! Read on for tips on how to brighten up your home for spring.

Easy Home Updates for Spring

Whether you’re ready for extensive renovations or minor tweaks, spring is the perfect time to update your home. It doesn’t have to be anything significant – even rearranging the furniture in a room or bringing in a new piece of art can freshen your space and put a little pep in your step!

1. Bring in some colour & Seasonal Decor

Spring is the perfect time to bring in lighter shades to help brighten your décor. You can make a major change with a fresh coat of paint or subtly add colour with pillows, throws, area rugs or window coverings. Shades of blue or green can brighten and lift the mood while remaining relatively neutral if your upgrades are prepping for a home sale. When it comes to seasonal decor, floral patterns, pastel throws or cushions, flowering branches, and live or artificial plants add a springtime feel to your décor. Just bringing in a few new pieces to a space can instantly freshen it up.

2. Bring in the outdoors

Nothing says spring like flowers, plants, or budding branches. Live green plants help freshen and clean the air and add a pop of colour to your space. If you don’t have a green thumb, try vases of fresh flowers, greenery, or branches. And if that even seems like too much, artificial flowers and plants have come a long way!

3. Use lighter fabrics

Swap out heavier fabrics like velvet curtains or heavy wool blankets for lighter options like sheer curtains and lightweight throws. You won’t need the heavier fabrics once the temperatures warm up, and it will also give you a chance to bring those brighter colours into your space.

4. Refresh your kitchen and dining area

One of the most frequently used spaces in a home, renovating or updating your kitchen is generally a good investment. If you aren’t looking for a significant change, a fresh coat of paint and new hardware for your cabinets can make a big impact. Declutter, organize and add a vase of fresh flowers to bring spring into your kitchen.

5. Update lighting & let in the sunshine

Nothing says spring like bright sunshine starting to shine through your windows. Replacing heavy drapes designed to keep the cold out will help the natural light come in. Look at the lighting currently in the space – do your overhead light fixtures need an update? Could you light up any dark corners with a floor or table lamp? A strategically placed mirror can also help reflect the light and make your space feel brighter and larger.

Updating Outside Your Home for Spring

1. Freshen your front door

When considering how to brighten up your home for spring, don’t forget about the outside of your home. The main entrance to your home gets the most attention, so starting there with your spring refresh makes sense. A good scrub of the windows and doors will eliminate the salt and dirt from winter snowfalls. Once the weather warms enough, a pot of tulips or other flowering bulb plants will add a touch of colour, and a wreath on your door makes the entrance a little more welcoming.

2. Get back in the garden

Even if it’s not time to plant, there’s a lot you can do to clean up and prep your gardens in early spring. Once the snow melts, you can rake up leaves and cut back any dead perennials. It’s also an excellent time to trim trees and shrubs (just not spring-blooming ones like lilacs).

3. Check the lawn

Early spring is the perfect time to rake and check your lawn, making note of any sparse patches that will need reseeding. If you are going to completely reseed your lawn, early spring is the time to use a weed preventer (4-6 weeks before you seed and fertilize).

4. Resurface the driveway

Winter is harsh on paved driveways, so spring is the perfect time to refresh by filling any cracks or holes and resurfacing the area for a smooth, clean drive. There are a lot of cost-effective companies who will come in and do this for you, or you can DIY.

5. Update light fixtures

We don’t often think about the lights over the garage or by the door, but they can become worn and chipped over time. New fixtures will ensure the outside of your home is well-lit, brightening things up for spring evenings outdoors.

Trends for Spring 2024

Raw, exposed materials

There are a number of new trends to look at when considering how to brighten up your home for spring. Textured raw materials are a hot trend in 2024. Think concrete, blackened steel or patinated finishes. This trend is minimal but adds texture and interest to kitchen counters, flooring, accents, and light fixtures.

Unique tiles

Colourful, textured, or vintage tiles are replacing the white-on-white subway tile. (Just be careful of this trend if you plan to sell – neutral is generally best when it comes time for your home to hit the market).

All shades of blue

Adding blue to your home is a great way to keep things neutral while adding a bit of colour. Whether you go with rich, deeper hues or bright blue tones, blue accents are a great way to add a subtle update to your home this spring.

Spindle furniture

Décor or furniture accented with decorative spindles will be popular this year. Once a Victorian armchair element, the spindles reflect a growing appreciation for antiques.

Patterned quilts & flower prints

Bring this trend into your home with a floral-patterned quilt on your bed or a series of flower market prints on the wall.

Geometric prints

Bold geometric prints on a throw blanket, area rug or art print bring in a bit of whimsy and contrast to an otherwise neutral backdrop.

Quiet luxury

Understated but with a warm and luxurious feel, quiet luxury is refined and elegant while still approachable. Achieve this trend with a neutral palette, organic materials, and layered lighting.

Rounded curves

Soft, rounded edges will add a softness to furniture and décor this spring. You’ll see this trend on everything from armchairs and countertops to mirrors and décor pieces.

Spring is the perfect time to update your home! After being stuck inside all winter, we’re all ready for a change. Adding colour and brightening your space are great ways to boost your mood and get you dreaming of the warm summer weather.  We hope you’ve enjoyed this blog on how to brighten up your home for spring!
