2023 Home Décor Trends: The 70s are Back!!

Share This Post:

The 70s are making a comeback in the design world! 2023 home décor trends flow around earthy tones, texture-rich fabrics, organic shapes, and fun patterns. After a few years of clean lines, sharp edges, and cooler tones, home décor is shifting to warmth and softness. The focus seems to be warm, cozy spaces with life and personality.

Of course, not all trends suit all people, tastes, or spaces. If you’re thinking of selling soon, we always recommend keeping things neutral to appeal to as many buyers as possible. It’s best to bring in trends in small ways (like cushions, bedding, and art) so new owners easily switch things up. But if you’ve just bought your forever home and need a little 2023 update – why not go all in with the décor trends that feel right for you?

14 Home Décor Trends for 2023

1. Mid-Century Décor

As the 60s and 70-s make their way back, quality-made mid-century pieces are in high demand. People are shifting away from clean prefab lines to furniture with a unique, handmade quality. Organic shapes, earthy tones, and textural finishes add warmth and interest to your home.

2. Curves & Arches

From arched doorways to curved furniture and rounded sculptural forms, this décor trend adds softness. We were in a design phase that included more modernism, square edges, and straight lines. Now we are seeing a swing in the other direction. These curves offer a softness and organic feel we haven’t seen for a while. You can incorporate this trend into your space with furniture, vases, mirrors or other small details.

3. Floating Vanities

Floating stone vanities certainly impact a master bath or powder room. If you’re remodelling a bathroom this year, this trend will add an ethereal aesthetic to your bathroom. The downfall of this trend is that the floating vanities can limit the amount of under-cabinet storage. If you need more space, try it in a smaller powder room where there is less need for storage.

4. Tramp Art

A classic form of American-European woodworking, tramp art involves meticulous carving and layering of wood or simple objects like nails or sticks. Because of its warmth, texture, and one-of-a-kind nature, it fits perfectly within a 70s aesthetic! Bring in this trend with an art box in your kitchen for tea, or add a unique lamp to your living room.

5. Brown-toned Furniture

Part of the 70s aesthetic, brown furniture is making a comeback! It’s warm, inviting, and natural, adding warmth to a space. Adding just a few pieces into cooler-toned rooms helps create a more inviting atmosphere. Pair large furniture with punchy fabric or fill an empty corner with a wooden accent stool or antique chair.

6. Gothic Interiors

Dark and moody colours are paired with interesting textures to make a gothic-style living room or bedroom. Using a darker-toned floral print wallpaper can be a great way to bring this into your bedroom without it being overly dark.

7. Gallery Walls

Although gallery walls never really go out of style, they are now having a moment. Using a mix of frames to fill a large space is less of a commitment than choosing one large piece of art. It allows you to display photos and art that have meaning to you, and you can switch up the images throughout the year for a fresh look. Choosing brown-toned frames is a great way to bring the 70s and warm-toned trends into your home.

8. Kitschy Kitchens

The 70s trend will head into kitchens this year as well! The best way to incorporate this trend into your kitchen is with pops of retro décor. Think colourful pyrex bowls on your counter, vintage cookie jars, or graphic patterned tea towels.

9. Pops of Colour

70s-inspired colours like marigold yellow or paprika orange will be heading into stores near you. If you’re not ready to fully embrace a return to the 70s, this can be a great way to add a new trend to your home. An accent chair, throw blanket, or cushion in one of these punchy shades will help warm up a neutral space.

10. Soft and Pretty Florals

Folksy floral prints are making their way into wallpaper, duvet covers, and art prints. Think soft and pretty, with a vintage feel to help warm up a cooler space. A great way to bring this trend into your home is with floral wallpaper in a powder room – it doesn’t take much to update a space.

11. Macrame Accents

Macramé accents are still popular in 2023. Part of the DIY, vintage-inspired trend, think macramé wall hangings or hanging planters. If you have a bright spot in your home, try creating a little indoor garden with vintage-inspired planters and hanging macramé holders.

12. White Kitchens

Another timeless – you really can’t go wrong with a white, bright kitchen. The last few years have been going towards adding darker tones (like navy or deep greens) to cabinets. For 2023, all white floor-to-ceiling cabinets are coming back, but pops of colours help warm it up. Add decor, artwork and plants in 70s-inspired hues.

13. Eye-catching marble

Marble in contrasting shades can act as a conversation piece in a space. From statement furniture like a marble desk or table to small-scale candle holders, serving trays or planters, there are many ways to bring this trend into your home in 2023.

14. Wicker Furniture

Wicker furniture isn’t just for the patio! This year’s wicker is a little different – and helps add an airy lightness to a space. It works well with natural wood accents and adds warmth and personality. Think of smaller accent pieces rather than more oversized furniture.

While you won’t want to incorporate every trend into your home, hitting a few can help freshen your space and keep things modern! We always suggest going more neutral and timeless with the big-scale décor in your home and adding trends to the area in more minor ways, like throw blankets, cushions, décor, and art.
